House of Burgesses

-lower house of legislature in Virginia


-set up in 1619


-sort of like a local govt


-any rules/laws they pass need to be approved by govt


-sets up idea of democracy


-various problems that virginians were facing led to the king investigating and while he took away the VA company's charter (1624) , he allowed the House of Burgesses to remain

Navigation Acts



-passed by Charles II


-attempted to restrict England ships the right to carry goods to and from England and the colonies


-did 3 things:


*any goods the colonists wanted to ship to Europe had to go on an english ship(which would be owned by england or colonists and therefore the money was kept within England); also certain "american" raw materials that can only be sold in England: cotton tobacco rice so that they wont have to compete with france or other countries


+good for england but not necessarily for america bc it keeps prices down therefore colonists dont make as much


*all goods shipped from europe to colonies had to take it to england first, unloaded, taxed, put on english ship and then sent to colonies


+england gets more money from taxes, goods look cheaper than the foreign goods, get money from shipping, drives buying prices up nad colonists dont like it


*if youre shipping a good meant to go to england, you had to pay security deposit and if it made it to england you got money back


+took profit out of smuggling


+previously ships leaving the colonies would "accidentally" end up somewhere else before ending in england



Proclamation of 1763

-KING GEORGE III and George Grenville(PM of england) helps set it up


-said americans could not move past territory lines he sets


+hopefully prevent strife between Native Americans and colonists


+essentially wanted to stabalize new territory ans stabilize relationships with N.A


-england had just gotten control over french territory

Tea Act

-passed by Parliament in 1773


*said east india company could now sell its tea in america without hvaing to pay tea tax left in place by the townshend acts


-most would think that americans would be happy but instead are outraged because it is a reminder of their lack of freedom


+end up boycotting all tea....leads to boston tea party

common sense

*says its time for America to wake up and realize that its the king who has abandoned us and allowed americans to be supressed


-support by the common people increased after its publication


Shay's Rebellion



-farmers start to rebel


-they march into communities where there are tax sales selling land of those who failed to pay taxes


-1786 over 1200 armed farmers traveling around MA preventing tax collections


-the rebellion is put down bc wealthy MA raise $to start own army(NATL govt couldnt prevent rebellion)

Whiskey Rebellion

-caused because of the whiskey tax proposed by Hamilton


+taxed alcoholic liquor producer


+falls heavily on backcountry farmers


-backcountry farmers dont like that wealthy and merchants not taxed


-farmers rebel and tried to find ways to avoid paying the tax


-in western PA


-harass tax collectors..would blow up stills of the farmers who were paying the tax


threaten to take over pitssburgh if they dont stop taxing


-natl govt has an army now and they put down rebellion


*demonstrated new govt wouldnt allow violent resistance


*divides americans into 2 parties:federalist(hamilton) or republican(madison)



louisiana purchase

-napoleon signed treaty that said france would gain territory from spain


-1802 american werer concerned because if new orleans was shut down, they couldnt unload any of their goods


-decide to negotiate instead of war because we just cut back on military


+france agrees to give us LA territory in exchange for $15 mill

treaty of ghent

-signed 1814


*ends war of 1812


-doesnt discuss any of the things that caused the war in the first place


*ends fighting and takes british american relations back to what it was before the war


+america was willing because the cause was britain fighting with france and now that that conflict is over, it isnt very relevant anymore

frederick Taylor

*invented scientific management


+he would time the workers and see how long it took them to do their job and then would come back with a new strategy for them to do their work in a faster and more efficient way


-saves business a lot of money


-harder to get a job and people had to do more work

Pullman strike

-pullman was a train car company


-pullman deciededs to set up a company town in Illinois


+houses, stores, schools for workers and their children


(cost more to live there but workers had no choice)


-workers got paid in company money


-1893 country in depression so they lay off workers AND cut wages


*1894 workers go on strike


+United Railway Union (most railway workers were part of it)decided to go on a sympathy strike ....didnt go on any train that had pullman car


+stops a lot of train movement and economy is hit hard because trains were main mode of goods transport


-people view this strike as a threat to capitalism


-fed govt gets involved (grover cleveland) and military goes in and several pullman workers were killed


+head of railway union is arrested and strike quickly fades

17th amendment

-ratified in 1913


*direct election of the senate...makes them actually listen to the people

*operated on assumption that the probles with americna economy are a result of too much taxation (especially on the wealthy) and we therefore dont have any money left to invest in the economy


-if you lower taxes economy will get better


-recommended dramatic cuts in social welfare spending


-1983 economy began to recover


+unemployment decreased, gross Natl product increase, inflation decrease to 5%


-however this recovery was partially funded by increased national debt


-poor in america did worse off that they had previously bc welfare programs were cut
