PSOAS MAJOR

Insertions
PROXIMAL

Superficial: T12-L4 and associated IV disks (lateral surface)

Deep: L1-L5 vertebrae TP

DISTAL

fuses with Iliacus as they course deep to inguinal ligament to form iliopsoas and attaches to the Lesser Trochanter
PSOAS MAJOR

Innervations
Primarily L2

- Direct branches from the Lumbar plexus L2-L4
PSOAS MAJOR

Action
Primary: Hip Flexion

Hip joint: flexion and external rotation

Lumbar Spine:

Unilateral (with femur fixed): ipsilateral side bending

Bilateral: raises te trunk from supine position
ILIACUS

Insertions
PROXIMAL

Iliac Fossa

DISTAL

fuses with psoas major as it passes deep to the inguinal ligament to form the iliopsoas and attaches to the lesser trochanter.
ILIACUS

Innervation
Primarily L2

Femoral nerve L2-L4
ILIACUS

Action
Principally: Hip Flexor

Hip joint: flexion and external rotation

Lumbar Spine:
- Unilateral: ipsilateral bending
- Bilateral: raises trunk from the supine position
Iliopsoas is assisted by what muscle to do hip flexion
rectus femoris - part of the quadriceps femoris
Iliopsoas forms the floor of the...
femoral triangle
GLUTEUS MAXIMUS

Insertions
PROXIMAL
1) Sacrum (dorsal surface lateral part)

2) Ilium (gluteal surface, Posterior part) The gluteal line closest to the PSIS

(3) Thoracolumbar Fascia)

4) Sacrotuberous Ligament

DISTAL

Upper Fibers: iliotibial tract
Lower Fibers: gluteal tuberosity
GLUTEUS MAXIMUS

innervation
inferior gluteal L5-S2

This nerve only innervates GM
GLUTEUS MAXIMUS

Action
Primary: Power extensor of the flexed thigh at the hip. It also externally rotates the thigh at the hip

Entire Muscle: extends and externally rotates the hip in sagital and coronal planes

Upper Fibers: ABduction
Lower Fibers: ADduction
GLUTEUS MEDIUS

Insertions
PROXIMAL

Ilium (gluteal surface below the iliac crest <> the anterior and posterior gluteal line)

DISTAL

Greater Trochanter of the Femur (Lateral Surface)
GLUTEUS MEDIUS

Innervation
Superior Gluteal L4-S1

also innervates the Gluteus Minimus and Tensor Fasciae Latae
GLUTEUS MEDIUS

Action
Entire Muscles: ABducts the hip when the leg is freely mobile, stabilizes the pelvis in the coronal plane during normal weight bearing

Anterior Part: Flexion and internal Rotation

Posterior Part: extension and external rotation
GLUTEUS MINIMUS

Insertions
PROXIMAL

Ilium (gluteal surface below the origin of the Gluteus Medius)

DISTAL

Greater Trochanter of the Femur (anterolateral surface)
GLUTEUS MINIMUS

Innervation
Superior Gluteal Nerve L4-S1

Also innervates Gluteus Medius and Tensor Fasciae Latae
GLUTEUS MINIMUS

Action
Entire Muscle:
ABducts the hip when the leg is freely mobile, stabilizes the pelvis in coronal plane during normal weight bearing

Anterior Part: Flexion and Internal rotation

Posterior Part: extension and external rotation
TENSOR FASCIAE LATAE

Insertions
PROXIMAL

Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (inferior to Sartorius)

DISTAL

Iliotibial Tract
TENSOR FASCIAE LATAE

Innervations
Superior Gluteal Nerve L4-S1

Also innervates Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus
TENSOR FASCIAE LATAE

Actions
Tenses the fascia lata

Hip Joint: ABduction, flexion (weakly), and internal rotation (weakly)
PIRIFORMIS

Insertions
PROXIMAL

Pelvic Surface of the Sacrum

DISTAL

Apex of the of the Greater Trochanter of the Femur
PIRIFORMIS

Innervations
Direct Branches from the Sacral Plexuses S1-S2
PIRIFORMIS

Actions
1) External rotation
2) ABduction
3) Extension of the Hip Joint
4) Stabilizes the Hip

One of five small lateral rotators of the the thigh which lie deep to GM
1) PirIformis
2) Obturator Internus
3) Superior Gemellus
4) Inferior Gemellus
5) Quadratus Femoris
PIRIFORMIS

Pathway
Starts anteriorly on the Sacrum but not on the Sacral Foramen. Goes through the Great Sciatic Foramen and attaches to the apex of the Greater Trochanter
