薄荷 bo he
Herba Menthae
- pungent, cool, lung and liver
- dispel wind-heat, clear head, improve eyesight, relieve sore throat, promote skin eruption, relieve itching
1. affection by exopathogenic wind-heat, or epidemic febrile diseases at early stage: fever, slight aversion to cold, headache, no sweating
2. common cold (wind-heat), headache, conjunctival congestion, swollen and sore throat (wind-fire)
3. measles at early stage, incomplete eruption, German measles, pruritus
- 2-10g, decocted later than other herbs
- contraindicated for exterior deficiency w/ spontaneous sweating
桑叶 sang ye
Folium Mori
- sweet, bitter, cold, lung and liver
- expel wind-heat, clear heat from lung to stop cough, clear heat from liver to improve vision
1. exopathogenic wind-heat, epidemic febrile diseases at early stage: fever, dizziness, headache, cough, swollen and sore throat
2. dry-heat in lung: cough w/ thick sputum, dryness in nose and throat
3. conjunctival congestion w/ dryness, pain and delacrimation (excess heat or wind-heat in liver channel)
- 5-10g, decocted or bolus and powder
菊花 ju hua
Flos Chrysanthemi
- sweet, bitter, slightly cold, liver and lung
- expel wind,clear heat, calm liver to improve vision
1. exopathic wind-heat, epidemic febrile diseases at early stage: fever, dizziness, headache
2. conjunctival congestion w/ swelling pain (wind-heat in liver, or liver-fire)
3. hyperactivity of liver yang: headache, dizziness, fullness in head
- 10-15g, decocted or bolus and powder
- yellow = dispel wind and heat
- white = calming liver and improve eyesight
葛根 ge gen
Radix Puerariae
- sweet, pungent, cool, spleen and stomach
- dispel pathogens from superficial muscles, promote production of body fluid to quench thirst, promote eruption of measels and invigorate spleen-yang to stop diarrhea
1. exterior syndromes: fever, headache, anhidrosis, stiffness and pain in neck/back
2. dire thirst in febrile diseases and polydipsia in diabetes
3. measles at early stage: fever, aversion to cold, inadequate eruption of measles
4. diarrhea due to damp-heat or deficiency of spleen
- 10-20g, decocted or bolus and powder
- diarrhea = roasted in hot ashes
- other purposes = unprepared
柴胡 chai hu
Radix Bupleuri
- bitter, pungent, slightly cold, liver, gallbladder
- expels pathogens from exterior: reduce fever, soothe depressed liver, invigorate spleen-yang
1. fever of common cold, alternate chills and fever, fullness and discomfort in chest and hypochondrium, bitter taste in mouth, dryness in throat (shaoyang channel in exogenous febrile disease)
2. stagnation of liver-qi: fullness and oppression in chest and diaphragm region, distending pain in hypochondrium
3. proctoptosis, hysteroptosis, gastroptosis and short breath, fatigue and lassitude (sinking of qi)
- 3-10g, decocted
- lifting and floating actions; contraindicated for tinnitus, deafness, deafness, dizziness, headache (exuberance of fire, yin deficiency), hyperactivity of liver-yang
牛蒡子 niu bang zi
Fructus Arctii
- pungent, bitter, cold, lung, stomach, large intestine
- disperse wind-heat, relieve sore throat, promote eruption, clear heat, remove toxins
1. wind-heat exopathogens: fever, headache, cough and sore throat, upward attack by wind-heat, conjunctival congestion and sore throat
2. infantile measles without smooth eruption, itching from German measles
3. sores and carbuncle caused by toxic heat, swelling pain of mumps
- 3-10g, pounded to pieces for decoction
- caution: cold of deficiency type in spleen and stomach: loose stool
蝉衣 chan yi
Periostracum Cicadae
- sweet, cold, lung, liver
- light for lifting and floating effects
- disperse wind-heat, promote eruption, improve eyesight, dispel wind and relieve spasm
1. wind-heat exopathogens, initial stage of epidemic febrile disease at Wei phase
2. dispel wind, relieve spasm: tetanus, clears heat from liver, infantile high fever and convulsion
- can treat conjunctival congestion and nebula
- 3-10g or 15-30g for tetanus
- caution: pregnant women
淡豆豉 dan dou chi
Semen Sojae Praeparatum
- pungent, sweet, slightly bitter, lung and stomach
- dispel exopathogens, relieve vexation
1. light wind-cold syndromes, wind-heat exterior syndromes
2. epidemic febrile disease in upper jiao, oppressed feeling in chest, vexation and insomnia
- 10-15g
升麻 sheng ma
Rhizoma Cimicfugae
- pungent, sweet, slightly cold, lung, spleen and stomach
- induce sweats to dispel exopathogens, promote eruption, elevate yang, lift qi, clear heat, remove toxins
1. clear yangming heat from interior, disperse pathogenic wind-heat from exterior, yangming headache; elevate yang, promote eruption, infantile measles without smooth eruption
2. sinking of qi in middle-jiao, lingering diarrhea, proctoptosis and hysteroptosis
3. remove stomach-fire, clear heat, remove toxins, sore throat, aphtha, toothache, headache, exanthema maculosum
- 3-10g
- stir-baked with honey = elevate yang and lift qi
- unprepared = others
漫荆子 man jing zi
Fructus Viticis
- pungent, bitter, cool, taiyang meridians
1. disperse wind, clear heat: headache or eye pain
2. clears and benefits head and eyes: liver channel wind-heat: excessive tearing, red, painful, swollen eyes, spots in front of eyes
3. drain damp, expel wind: auxiliary herb for wind-damp in limbs: stiffness, numbness, cramping or heaviness
- caution: headaches or eye problems due to yin/blood deficiency and stomach qi deficiency
- antagonizes Radix Aconiti (乌头 wu tou) and Gypsum (石膏 shi gao)
- 6-12g
- also used in tinctures = headache and eye pain
