rapid onset anticoagulant. it exerts direct effect on blood coagulation by enhancing the inhibitory actions of antithrombin 3 therby blocking the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin and fibrinogen to fibrin.

contraindications
hypersensitivity, active bleeding, bleeding disorders, recent intrcranial, intraspinal, or eye surgery, htn, gi bleeding

stemi: bolus 60 units/kg max of 4000 units continue with 12units/kg per hr and round to nearest 50 units max of 1000 an hr
interaction
aspirin and other nsaid increase risk of bleeding. nitro iv may decrease anticoagulant activity. protamine antagonizes effect of hepatin

numbness, headache, bleeding, htn, vasospasm, chest pain, brochospasm, itching, burning, urticaria
precautions
use caution in pt with alcoholism, hx of atopy, during menstration, 3rd tri of pregnancy or during or post partum. cerebral embolism.
