What is Hemotology?
The Study of Blood
Why do vet techs need to know hemotology?
Diagnostic testing, Disease evaluation, pre-surgery screening, improve animal care, increase revanue for the veterinary clinic
What is Hematopoesis?
The production of white blood cells
What are the contents of whole blood?
Red Blood Cells, White blood cells, plasma, and platelets (thrombocytes)
What is plasma and what are it's contents?
It is the fluid in which the rest of whole blood is suspended. It is 90% water and 10% Constituents such as vitamins, carbs, protiens, enzymes, horemones, lipids, ect.
What are the colors of plasma and what do they mean.
straw/clear: Normal
Yellow/orange: Icteric (jaundiced)
White: lipemic (fat)
Red/pink: Hemolesis (broken red blood cells)
What is important to remember when you are inverting a blood tube to create a hemogenis mixture?
If you shake, you break!
Will cause destruction of RBC's and hemolesised plasma.
What is heperin?
A type of anticoagulent.
Suitable for use durring blood chemistry analysis and examination of red blood cells.
