Blood transports...
O2, Metabolic wastes (urea, CO2), Ions of various salts (Na+, Ca+, Cl-, HCO3-, Hormones)
Where are red blood cells produced?
Bone Marrow
Neutrophil
White blood cells, first line of defense against against invading organism. Ingests foreign body by phagocytosis
Monocytes
White Blood Cells, 2nd Line of defense. Largest WBC, slow moving. Ingests foreign body by phagocytosis. Usually in CHRONIC DISEASES.
Lymphocytes
WBC. Do no phagocytize, form antibodies to fight infection
Antibodies
Large proteins that deactivate foreign material such as bacteria
Basophils
WBC. Carry on some phagocytosis. Transport fat in the blood. Produce anticoagulant, to prevent blood from clotting in vessels.
Eosinophils
WBC. Minor phagocytosis. Detoxify foreign particles associated with allergic reactions - allergies and parasitism.
Platelets, Thrombocytes
Cell fragments produced by large cells in bone marrow. Disk shaped, 1/4-1/2 size of RBCs.
Normal : 150,000-400,000/ cubic mm. Important in blood clotting.
Granulocytes
Type of Leukocytes (WBC) - made up of Neutrophils, Eosinophils, and Basophils.
Agranulocytes
Type of Leukocytes (WBC) - made up of Monocytes and Lymphocytes
Lymph
Plasma minus most of the proteins. Contains small molecules and is able to pass into the cell tissue space, or interstitial space.
