What does Erythropoietin do? (EPO)
It stimulates erythrocyte production.
What are some other names for Interleukin-3?
Multi-colony stimulating factor, stem cell activating factor, persisting cell-stimulating factor, Hemopoietin-2
What does Interleukin-3 do?
IL-3 stimulates proliferation and differentiation of granulocyte, macrophage, eosinophil, mast cells, megakarocyte, T and B cell lineages, and early myeloid stem cells. It also interacts with EPO to stimulate erythroid colony formation, stimulates proliferation of AML blasts, stimulates prolif of mature macrophages, histamine release by mast cells, and eosinophil killing of schistosome manson larvae.
What does G-CSF stand for?
granulocyte colony-stimulating factor
What are other names for G-CSF?
Differentiation factor, MGI-2
What does G-CSF do?
G-CSF stimulates granulocyte lineage proliferation and differentiation and terminal differentiation of WEHI-3B myelomonocytic leukemia. It acts on early myeloid stem cells, increases neutrophil phagocytosis, releases neutrophils from bone marrow, and increases proliferation of small cell carcinoma and colon carcinoma cell lines, HL-60, and KG-1. Stimulates pre-B-cell formation in liquid culture.
What does GM-CSF stand for?
Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor
What does GM-CSF do?
GM-CSF stimulates granulocyte, macrophage, and megakaryocyte proliferation and differentiation, early myeloid stem cells, and in the presence of EPO---stimulates EPO. It also enhances the cytotoxic and phagocytic activity of neutrophils. In addition it stimulates AML blasts to proliferate and stimulates proliferation of small cell and colon carcinoma cell lines.
What does CSF-1 stand for? Are there other names for it?
Colony-stimulating factor-1
Macrophage colony-stimulating factor
What does CSF-1 do?
CSF-1 stimulates predominantly macrophage-monocyte proliferation and differentiation with lesser effects on granulocytes. It stimulates macrophage phagocytosis, killing, migration, antitumor activity, and metabolism.
What are other names for IL-1?
endogenous pyrogen, Hemopoietin-1, Osteoclast-activating factor, Lymphocyte-activating factor
What does IL-1 do?
IL-1 induces synthesis of acute phase proteins by hepatocytes, activates resting T cells, is a co-factor for T cell and B cell proliferation, stimulates early myeloid stem cells, and induces production of growth factors including G-CSF, GM-CSF, IL-6, CSF-1, IL-3, IL-2, and interferon.
What is another name for IL-2?
T-cell growth factor
What does IL-2 do?
It is a growth factor for T cells, activating cytotoxic T lymphocytes, promotes synthesis of other cytokines, enhances NK cell function.
What are other names for IL-4?
B cell stimulating factor-1 (BSF-1), B cell differentiation factor (BCDF), IgG induction factor
What does IL-4 do?
IL-4 enhances antibody production (IgG and IgE) upregulates class II MHC molecules and Fc receptors on B cells. Costimulant with anti-IgM antibodies for induction of DNA synthesis in resting B cells. In the presence of IL-3, IL-4 enhances mast cell growth. With G-CSF it enhances granulocytes or GM colony formation, and with erythropoietin and/or IL-1 stimulates erythroid and megakaryocyte colony formation.
What are other names for IL-5?
Eosinophil differentiation factor (EDF), T cell replacing factor (TRF), B cell growth factor- II (BCGF-II), B cell differentiation factor (BCDF)
What does IL-5 do?
IL-5 enhances antibody production particularly IgA. It also stimulates eosinophil production and differentiation. GM-CSF and IL-3 act synergistically with IL-5 to stimulate eosinophil proliferation and differentiation. It also promotes differentiation by normal B cells.
What are other names for IL-6?
B cell stimulating factor-2 (BSF-2), B2 interferon, T cell activation factor, hybridoma growth factor
What does IL-6 do?
It induces B cell differentiation and IgG secretion. It is a growth factor for hybridomas and mouse plasmacytomas. It synergizes with IL-3 on early marrow myeloid stem cells.IL-6 also stimulates platelet production (may be thought of as a thrombopoietin).
What is another name for IL-7?
Lymphopoietin-1
What does IL-7 do?
IL-7 stimulates pre-B-cell production.
What are other names for IL-8?
IL-8 is an inflammatory mediator and stimulates activation of neutrophils.
What does IL-9 do?
IL-9 stimulates erythroid colony formation and proliferation of a megakaryocytes cell line.
What is another name for IL-10?
Cytokine synthesis inhibiting factor
What does IL-10 do?
IL-10 inhibits cytokine production by Th1 cells.
What does IL-11 do?
IL-11 stimulates B cell, megakaryocyte, and mast cell lineages.
What are other names for C-Kit ligand?
Mast cell factor, stem cell factor, hemolymphopoietic growth factor-1.
What does C-Kit ligand do?
C-Kit ligand acts on relatively early stem cells synergistically with other cytokines. It also stimulates pre-B cells.
What produces EPO and in response to what?
The kidneys produce EPO in response to a low O2 in the blood flowing through them.
