What is the general definition of anemia?

- decrease in the number of circulating erythrocytes (RBCs)
- causes decreased Hb and Hct lab values (though some anemias may have normal values, e.g. acute blood loss anemia) |

- initially normal
- as production increases, retic count increases - mobilization of platelets and leukocytes lead to thrombocytosis and leukocytosis |

Why is hematocrit a poor indicator of anemia in the setting of acute blood loss?

Hct will not change until extra- and intravascular fluids have had time to re-equilibrate, i.e. until intravascular volume has been restored
