What is the general definition of anemia?
- decrease in the number of circulating erythrocytes (RBCs)
- causes decreased Hb and Hct lab values (though some anemias may have normal values, e.g. acute blood loss anemia)
Name nine signs and symptoms of anemia.
palpitations
systolic cardiac murmurs
high-output heart failure
pallor
orthostatic hypotension (when low volume)
fatigue
dizziness
syncope
angina
Describe the peripheral blood smear in the setting of blood loss.
- initially normal
- as production increases, retic count increases
- mobilization of platelets and leukocytes lead to thrombocytosis and leukocytosis
Why is hematocrit a poor indicator of anemia in the setting of acute blood loss?
Hct will not change until extra- and intravascular fluids have had time to re-equilibrate, i.e. until intravascular volume has been restored
