Attraction
A characteristic that causes pleasure or interest by appealing to a person's desires or tastes, and causes one to be drawn to the other
Fluctuating asymmetry
Small, subtle differences in the size of one of a bilateral feature, such as arms, legs, or breasts
Ultraviolet (UV) light
A component of sunlight that is beneficial in small amounts, but can damage the skin cells and cause premature aging and skin cancer.
Collagen and Elastin
Connective tissues that provide strength and elasticity to the skin
Body mass index (BMI)
A measure of a person's weight in relation to his or her height.
Waist-to-hip Ratio (WHR)
The ratio of a person's waist measurement to his or her hip measurement. Someone with a 28-inch waist and 40-inch hips would have a WHR of 0.7.
Sexualization
To make sexual (usually inappropriate), or to hold a person to a standard that equates a narrowly defined physical attractiveness with being sexy.
Self-objectification
The process by which people regard themselves superficially, by their physical appearance, measurements, or weight, rather than by their health, character, or intelligence.
Human leukocyte antigens/major histocompatibility complex (HLA/MHC)
A series of genes that play an important role in the immune system, by coding for proteins that differentiate self from non-self.
Ghrelin
A hormone produced in the stomach that increases appetite and decreases fat loss. Dieting and lack of sleep increase these levels.
Botox
A medical injection into the face to paralyze the muscles and prevent wrinkles. This is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum (which causes botulism). Botulinum is one of the most toxic naturally-occurring substances known to man.
Social expectancy theory
The theory that suggests that our expectations about how we'll be treated become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Flirtation
Behaviors meant to arouse romantic or sexual interest. In the 16th century this word meant "to sneer or scoff at."
Eyebrow flash
A very brief lift of the eyebrows that designates recognition or an invitation for interaction.
Nonverbal Leakage
Cues in a person's body language that indicate their true emotional state or intentions.
Shared focus
An external subject that both participants can see, hear, or experience.
Error management theory
The theory that suggests that when making a decision, a subject can make two types of errors, a false positive or a false negative. It is more adaptive to err on the side that is less evolutionarily risky or that allows for a possible sexual encounter.
Courtship
From the Indo-European root gher, meaning "to grasp or enclose," this term is the sequence of interactive behaviors by which men and women choose a mate.
Sexual Script
The socially learned idea of "proper" sexual behavior. Men and women often have different types of this term. Traditionally, men are seen as sexual initiators, and women as the "gatekeepers" who decide how much sexual activity will occur.
Date
An appointment to go out socially with another person, often out of romantic interest. The word today has a more formal connotation, in which an event is planned ahead of time, and often includes food and/or entertainment.
Going steady
The dating periods before engagement or marriage, when a couple is exclusive and not dating others.
Unwanted Sex
Sex that is willingly consented to, although at least one participant may have no sexual interest or motivation to take part in the sexual activity.
Nonconsensual sex (non-con)
Involves sexual acts that occur without mutual consent and against the will of one participant.
Interracial
A couple that includes partners who are members of different races.
Miscegenation
Marrying, cohabiting, or having sexual relations with a partner of a different race.
Hookup
A term with many interpretations, it is most commonly defined as a one-time sexual encounter between two people who are strangers or brief acquaintances. This term can include any physical intimacy from kissing to intercourse.
Friends with benefits (FWB)
More than a hookup but less than a relationship, this term describes two friends who have sex without any exclusive romantic commitment.
Pluralistic ignorance
A situation in which most members of a group privately reject a norm, but secretly and incorrectly assume that most others accept it.
Speed dating
A dating event in which people meet a large number of people through a series of short one-on-one encounters.
