וַתֵּצֵ֗א מִן־הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיְתָה־שָׁ֔מָּה
|
And she went from the place she had lived
|
|
וּשְׁתֵּ֥י כַלֹּתֶ֖יהָ עִמָּ֑הּ
|
and her two daughters in law with her
|
|
וַתֵּלַ֣כְנָה בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ
|
and they went the way
|
|
לָשׁ֖וּב אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ יְהוּדָֽה׃
|
to return to the land of Judah
|
|
וַתֹּ֤אמֶר נָעֳמִי֙ לִשְׁתֵּ֣י כַלֹּתֶ֔יהָ
|
and Naomi said to her two daughter-in-laws
|
|
לֵ֣כְנָה שֹּׁ֔בְנָה אִשָּׁ֖ה לְבֵ֣ית אִמָּ֑הּ
|
go and return each of you to the house of their mothers
|
|
יַעֲשֶׂה יְהוָ֤ה עִמָּכֶם֙ חֶ֔סֶד
|
May Adonai do with you loving kindness
|
|
כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֛ם עִם־הַמֵּתִ֖ים וְעִמָּדִֽי׃
|
as you did with the dead and with me.
|
|
יִתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ לָכֶ֔ם וּמְצֶ֣אןָ מְנוּחָ֔ה
|
May Adonai grant and may you that each of you find security,
|
|
אִשָּׁ֖ה בֵּ֣ית אִישָׁ֑הּ
|
each in the house of a husband.
|
|
וַתִּשַּׁ֣ק לָהֶ֔ן
|
and she kissed them
|
|
וַתִּשֶּׂ֥אנָה קוֹלָ֖ן וַתִּבְכֶּֽינָה׃
|
and they lifted up their voices and they wept
|
|
וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה־לָּ֑הּ
|
and they said to her
|
|
כִּי־אִתָּ֥ךְ נָשׁ֖וּב לְעַמֵּֽךְ׃
|
but we want to go with you, back to your people!
|
|
וַתֹּ֤אמֶר נָעֳמִי֙ שֹׁ֣בְנָה בְנֹתַ֔י
|
and Naomi said you must return my daughter's
|
|
הַֽעֽוֹד־לִ֤י בָנִים֙ בְּֽמֵעַ֔י
|
Do I still have son's in my intestines (womb)?
|
|
וְהָי֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם לַאֲנָשִֽׁים
|
that they might be husbands for you?
|
|
שֹׁ֤בְנָה בְנֹתַי֙ לֵ֔כְןָ
|
you must go and return
|
|
כִּ֥י זָקַ֖נְתִּי מִהְי֣וֹת לְאִ֑ישׁ
|
because I have become to old to have a husband
|
|
כִּ֤י אָמַ֨רְתִּי֙ יֶשׁ־לִ֣י תִקְוָ֔ה
|
even if I thought there was hope for me
|
|
גַּ֣ם הָיִ֤יתִי הַלַּ֨יְלָה֙ לְאִ֔ישׁ
|
and even got a husband this night
|
|
וְגַ֖ם יָלַ֥דְתִּי בָנִֽים
|
and also bearing son's
|
|
הֲלָהֵ֣ן׀ תְּשַׂבֵּ֗רְנָה
|
Therefore would you wait
|
|
עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִגְדָּ֔לוּ
|
until they were grown?
|
|
הֲלָהֵן֙ תֵּֽעָגֵ֔נָה
|
would you shut yourself off
|
|
לְבִלְתִּ֖י הֱי֣וֹת לְאִ֑ישׁ
|
not to have a husband?
|
|
אַ֣ל בְּנֹתַ֗י כִּֽי־מַר־לִ֤י מְאֹד֙ מִכֶּ֔ם
|
no my daughter's, because it has been much more bitter for me than you
(I am bitter on your account) |
|
כִּֽי־יָצְאָ֥ה בִ֖י יַד־יְהוָֽה
|
because going against me is Adonai's hand
|
|
וַתִּשֶּׂ֣נָה קוֹלָ֔ן וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ינָה ע֑וֹד
|
and they lifted up their voices and again wept again
|
|
וַתִּשַּׁ֤ק עָרְפָּה֙ לַחֲמוֹתָ֔הּ
|
and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law
|
|
וַתֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה֙ שָׁ֣בָה יְבִמְתֵּ֔ךְ אֶל־עַמָּ֖הּ וְאֶל־אֱלֹהֶ֑יהָ
|
and she said, Here!Here! Your sister-in-law has returned to her people and her gods.
|
|
שׁ֖וּבִי אַחֲרֵ֥י יְבִמְתֵּֽךְ
|
return after your sister in law
|
|
וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רוּת֙ אַל־תִּפְגְּעִי־בִ֔י
|
but Ruth said, do not pressure me
|
|
לְעָזְבֵ֖ךְ לָשׁ֣וּב מֵאַחֲרָ֑יִךְ
|
to forsake you to turn back from following you.
|
|
כִּ֠י אֶל־אֲשֶׁ֨ר תֵּלְכִ֜י אֵלֵ֗ךְ
|
because where you go I go
|
|
וּבַאֲשֶׁ֤ר תָּלִ֨ינִי֙ אָלִ֔ין
|
and where you spend the night I will spend the night
|
|
עַמֵּ֣ךְ עַמִּ֔י וֵאלֹהַ֖יִךְ אֱלֹהָֽי
|
your people are my people and your God my God.
|
|
בַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר תָּמ֨וּתִי֙ אָמ֔וּת וְשָׁ֖ם אֶקָּבֵ֑ר
|
In the place you die, there I will die and there I will be buried
|
|
כֹּה֩ יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ וְכֹ֣ה יֹסִ֔יף
|
So may Yahweh do to me and also more (May God punish me severly)
|
|
כִּ֣י הַמָּ֔וֶת יַפְרִ֖יד בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵינֵֽךְ
|
even though the death is causing separation between me and between you.
|
|
וַתֵּ֕רֶא כִּֽי־מִתְאַמֶּ֥צֶת הִ֖יא לָלֶ֣כֶת אִתָּ֑הּ
|
and she saw that she was determined to go with her
|
|
וַתֶּחְדַּ֖ל לְדַבֵּ֥ר אֵלֶֽיהָ
|
and she stopped talking to her
|
|
וַתֵּלַ֣כְנָה שְׁתֵּיהֶ֔ם עַד־בֹּאָ֖נָה בֵּ֣ית לָ֑חֶם
|
and the two of them went until they entered Bethlehem
|
|
וַיְהִ֗י כְּבֹאָ֨נָה֙ בֵּ֣ית לֶ֔חֶם וַתֵּהֹ֤ם כָּל־הָעִיר֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ן
|
and it happened as soon as they came to Bethlehem the whole town gossiped because of them.
|
|
וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה הֲזֹ֥את נָעֳמִֽי
|
and the women said, "Is this Naomi"?
|
|
וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ן אַל־תִּקְרֶ֥אנָה לִ֖י נָעֳמִ֑י
|
and she said to them, do not call me Naomi
|
|
קְרֶ֤אןָ לִי֙ מָרָ֔א
|
call me by Mara
|
|
כִּי־הֵמַ֥ר שַׁדַּ֛י לִ֖י מְאֹֽד
|
because Shaddai has caused me great bitterness
|
|
אֲנִי֙ מְלֵאָ֣ה הָלַ֔כְתִּי וְרֵיקָ֖ם הֱשִׁיבַ֣נִי יְהוָ֑ה
|
I went away full but Yahweh brought me back empty handed.
|
|
לָ֣מָּה תִקְרֶ֤אנָה לִי֙ נָעֳמִ֔י
|
How can you call me Naomi
|
|
וַֽיהוָה֙ עָ֣נָה בִ֔י וְשַׁדַּ֖י הֵ֥רַֽע לִֽי
|
when Yahweh answers against me and Shaddai brought calamity to me.
|
|
וַתָּ֣שָׁב נָעֳמִ֗י וְר֨וּת הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֤ה כַלָּתָהּ֙ עִמָּ֔הּ
|
and she returned, Naomi and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter in law with her
|
|
הַשָּׁ֖בָה מִשְּׂדֵ֣י מוֹאָ֑ב
|
returning from the fields of Moab.
|
|
וְהֵ֗מָּה בָּ֚אוּ בֵּ֣ית לֶ֔חֶם
|
and they came to Bethlehem
|
|
בִּתְחִלַּ֖ת קְצִ֥יר שְׂעֹרִֽים
|
at the start of the barley harvest
|
|
וּֽלְנָעֳמִ֞י מיֹדַ֣֯ע לְאִישָׁ֗הּ
|
and Naomi had a kinsman by her husband
|
|
אִ֚ישׁ גִּבּ֣וֹר חַ֔יִל מִמִּשְׁפַּ֖חַת אֱלִימֶ֑לֶךְ
|
a man of great wealth from the clan of Elimelech
|
|
וּשְׁמ֖וֹ בֹּֽעַז
|
and his name was Boaz
|
|
וַתֹּאמֶר֩ ר֨וּת הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֜ה אֶֽל־נָעֳמִ֗י
|
and Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi
|
|
אֵֽלְכָה־נָּ֤א הַשָּׂדֶה֙ וַאֲלַקֳטָ֣ה בַשִּׁבֳּלִ֔ים
|
let me go to the fields and glean in the ears of grain
|
|
אַחַ֕ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶמְצָא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינָ֑יו
|
behind someone in whose eyes I might find favor
|
|
וַתֹּ֥אמֶר לָ֖הּ לְכִ֥י בִתִּֽי
|
and she said to her go my daughter
|
|
וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ וַתָּבוֹא֙ וַתְּלַקֵּ֣ט בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה אַחֲרֵ֖י הַקֹּצְרִ֑ים
|
and she went and she came and gleaned in the field in after the reapers.
|
|
וַיִּ֣קֶר מִקְרֶ֔הָ חֶלְקַ֤ת הַשָּׂדֶה֙ לְבֹ֔עַז אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִמִּשְׁפַּ֥חַת אֱלִימֶֽלֶךְ
|
and it happened the she chanced on the tract of land that was the the field of Boaz who was from the clan of Elimelech
|
|
וְהִנֵּה־בֹ֗עַז בָּ֚א מִבֵּ֣ית לֶ֔ח
|
and behold Boaz came from Bethlehem
|
|
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לַקּוֹצְרִ֖ים יְהוָ֣ה עִמָּכֶ֑ם
|
and he said to the reapers, May Yahweh be with you all
|
|
וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖וֹ יְבָרֶכְךָ֥ יְהוָֽה
|
and they said to him, may Yahweh bless you
|
|
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר בֹּ֙עַז֙ לְנַעֲר֔וֹ הַנִּצָּ֖ב עַל־הַקּֽוֹצְרִ֑ים
|
And Boaz said to his servant who stood over the reapers.
|
|
לְמִ֖י הַנַּעֲרָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת
|
Whose young woman is this.
|
|
וַיַּ֗עַן הַנַּ֛עַר הַנִּצָּ֥ב עַל־הַקּוֹצְרִ֖ים וַיֹּאמַ֑ר
|
And the servant who stood over the reapers answered and said,
|
|
נַעֲרָ֤ה מֽוֹאֲבִיָּה֙ הִ֔יא הַשָּׁ֥בָה עִֽם־נָעֳמִ֖י מִשְּׂדֵ֥ה מוֹאָֽב
|
“She is a Moabite girl who returned with Naomi from the countryside of Moab.
|
|
וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אֲלַקֳטָה־נָּא֙ וְאָסַפְתִּ֣י בָֽעֳמָרִ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֖י הַקּוֹצְרִ֑ים
|
And she asked,” let me please glean and let me gather among the sheaves behind the reapers.
|
|
וַתָּב֣וֹא וַֽתַּעֲמ֗וֹד מֵאָ֤ז הַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ וְעַד־עַ֔תָּה
|
So she came and has been on her feet from the morning until now.
|
|
זֶ֛ה שִׁבְתָּ֥הּ הַבַּ֖יִת מְעָֽט
|
(This her sitting the house is little.) She has only taken a brief rest.
|
|
וַיֹּאמֶר֩ בֹּ֨עַז אֶל־ר֜וּת הֲל֧וֹא שָׁמַ֣עַתְּ בִּתִּ֗י
|
And Boaz said to Ruth, listen my daughter
|
|
אַל־תֵּלְכִי֙ לִלְקֹט֙ בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה אַחֵ֔ר וְגַ֛ם לֹ֥א תַעֲבוּרִ֖י מִזֶּ֑ה
|
Do not go and glean in another field and also do not pass over from this one
|
|
וְכֹ֥ה תִדְבָּקִ֖ין עִם־נַעֲרֹתָֽי
|
But here you shall cling with my girls.
|
|
עֵינַ֜יִךְ בַּשָּׂדֶ֤ה אֲשֶׁר־יִקְצֹרוּן֙ וְהָלַ֣כְתְּ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן
|
Keep your eyes on the field that they reap and go after them.
|
|
הֲל֥וֹא צִוִּ֛יתִי אֶת־הַנְּעָרִ֖ים לְבִלְתִּ֣י נָגְעֵ֑ךְ
|
I have ordered the servants not to touch you.
|
|
וְצָמִ֗ת וְהָלַכְתְּ֙ אֶל־הַכֵּלִ֔ים וְשָׁתִ֕ית מֵאֲשֶׁ֥ר יִשְׁאֲב֖וּן הַנְּעָרִֽים
|
And if you get thirsty go to the containers to drink from where the servants have drawn.
|
|
וַתִּפֹּל֙ עַל־פָּנֶ֔יהָ וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ אָ֑רְצָה
|
And she fell on her face and she bowed down on the ground
|
|
וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו מַדּוּעַ֩ מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֤ן בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ לְהַכִּירֵ֔נִי וְאָנֹכִ֖י נָכְרִיָּֽה
|
And she said to him, “why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should recognize me, a foreigner”.
|
