What is Acardia?
No heart
What is Ectopia Cordis?
Heart development in an abnormal location due to incomplete fusion of lateral fold resulting in improper body wall formation.
Typically fatal due to the exposure of the heart to external environment.
Dextrocardia
Heart tube bends left instead of right resulting in transposition of heart and vessels. When accompanied with situs inversus, incidence of congenital defects is low.
Atrial Septal Defect
1)patent foramen ovale
2)endocardial cushion defect
3)common atrium
Patent Foramen Ovale
most common ASD
no direct problems associated
Endocardial Cushion Defect
due to incomplete fusion of endocardial cushions
septum primum fails to fuse with the endocardial cushions
patent foramen primum
Ventricular Septal Defects
1)membranous septal defect
2)Muscular septal defect
3)absence of IV septum
Membranous septal defect
most common VSD
Failure of subendocardial tissue to grow from right side of fused endocardial cushions and fuse with muscular septum, and aorticopulmonary septum
Muscular Septal Defect
May appear anywhere within muscular septum
Absence of IV septum
Rare condition resulting in a common ventricle
Bulbis Cordis Defects
1) Tetralogy of Fallot
2) Persistant Truncus Arteriosus
What are the defects that accompany Tetralogy of Fallot?
1)pulmonary stenosis
2)VSD
3)overriding aorta
4)hypertrophy of right ventricle
Persistant Truncus Arteriosus
results from failure of truncal ridges and aorticopulmonary septum to develop normally
results in a single arterial vessel giving rise to the pulmonary trunk and ascending aorta
