What hearing test can you use in kids up to 6 months of age?
1.SABR (Screening auditory brainstem response
2.OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) |
What is SABR?
Screening Auditory Brainstem Response
-Auditory stimuli is presented to each ear through headphones -3 electrodes placed to aberage brainstem response to stimuli -It measures a neural response -Rules out everything but a mild hearing loss |
What is OAE?
Automated Otoacoustic Emissions
-Brief acoustic stimuli presented to each ear through a small ear probe placed in the ear canal -Transmitter and receiver components in ear probe records cochlear outer hair cell emissions or "echo" in response to incoming stimuli -Pre-neural responses -Does not rule out mild hearing loss |
What happens if a newborn baby does not pass the hearing screen?
Return for an out-patient re-screen.
What if they do not pass the re-screen?
They need a DIAGNOSTIC ABR
