Case Study

Mary Smith, age 18, was involved in a motor vehicle accident (MVA). She was unrestrained at the time and was thrown clear of the car. Upon impact she sustained several fractures. Her hospital stay required extensive surgery and lasted two months. She was discharge but cannot go home until she receives some inpatient rehabilitation. It is predicted that this may take two months. Before she can return home from rehabilitation, she must be provide home healthcare assistance to teach her family how to care for her long-term needs.

Being a team Player

Nursing care is delivered in a team approach. The patients care depends on people who can effectively share the workload. Know the name's of others on your team and offer to assist them whenever you can. Make time to help them and don't hesitate to ask for their help when necessary. Clearly state how much time you have to help them, and be clear about what kind of help you need from them. Quality patient care depends on good teamwork.

Showing Cultural Awareness

Cultural awareness is the ability of the nursing assistant to identify and include the patient's cultural need's in the plan of care. Think about what you read in this chapter, particularly in this section entitled " Healthcare in the United States " and " The Care Plan." Write a short statement about how this information may be used to meet a patient's cultural needs. You may also include information from your own or other's past experiences. If time allows, take the opportunity to discuss this topic in class.
