Distress
negative stress; causes anxiety or concern; can be short or long-term; is perceived as outside our coping ability; feels unpleasant; decreases performance; can lead to physical and mental problems
Eustress
positive stress; short-term; motivates, focuses energy; is perceived within our coping abilities; feels exciting; improves performance; often called the fight-or-flight reaction
Fight-or-Flight Reaction
the name often given to the stress response known as eustress because when someone is faced with a physical threat, the two possible actions are to fight or run away
Body Reactions to Stress
heart rate increases; pupils widen (enhancing vision); muscles tense; fuels, such as fat, are released from storage (for use by muscles); blood flow to digestive organs is reduced (these can wait); immune system temporarily shuts down (to free up energy)
