Define neuron

All the control functions of the nervous system must be carried out by a group of cells called neurons. Bizarre looking with many branches.

Define cerebrum

One of the 3 major parts of brain. Convolutions on the surface increase the surface area of brain but allows it to be folded into a smaller place.

Define medulla oblangata

Responsible for impulses that control heartbeat, breathing and the muscle tone in blood vessels which controls blood pressure.

Define diencephalon

Part of brain not visible from exterior. Contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal body and pituitary gland.

What are the diencephalons functions?

Thalamus- relays and processes info going to the cerebellum


Hypothalamus- regulates hormone levels, temperature, water-balance, thirst, appetite and some emotions; regulates the pituitary gland and controls the endocrine system.


Pineal Body- responsible for secretion of melatonin (body clock)


Pituitary Gland- secretes hormones for various functions.

What's the difference between arteries and veins?

• Arteries take blood from the heart and veins bring blood to the heart.


• Arteries blood is usually oxygenated and veins in usually deoxygenated.


• Arteries have think walls and burns have thin walls.


• Arteries have no valves and veins have valves.


Arteries have high pressure and veins have low pressure.

What are the 4 lobes of the brain?

Frontal lobes- motor activities, conscious thoughts, speech, personality and impulsiveness


Parietal lobes- body sense, perception and speech


Occipital lobes- vision


Temporal lobes- hearing, taste and integration of emotions
