Neurotransmitters
Regulate nervous system functioning. Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system promotes the secretion of large quantities of two neurotransmitters, epinephrine and norepinephrine, called catecholamines.
Catecholamines
neurotransmitters, epinephrine and norepinephrine, causes sympathetic stimulation, causes important body changes: heart rate increase, heart capillaries dilate, and blood vessels constrict, increasing blood pressure. Flight or Fight responses. Repreated arousal can cause problems such as coronary artery disease and hypertension.
Epilepsy
Disease of the central nervous system affecting more than 3 mill people in the US. Often idopathic meaning no specific cause for symptoms. Symptomatic epilepsy may be traced to injury during birth, severe injury to the head, infectious disease such as meningitis or encephalitis or metabolic or nutritional disorders. Marked by seizures, ranging from barely noticeable staring or purposeless motor movements to violent convulsions.
Cerebral Palsy
500k+ people in US have CP. It is chronic and nonprogressive marked by lack of muscle control. It stems from brain damage caused by an interruption in the brains oxygen supply, usually during childbirth.
Parkinson's Disease
1 mill people in US afflicted. Progressive degeneration of the basal ganglia, the groupe of nuclei that controls smooth motor coordination. Results in tremors, rigidity, and slowness of movement. Cause unknown byt depletion of dopamine may be involved. Treatments include medications. A technique for making cells within the substantia nigra regenerate has been developed which makes use of pump in patients chest.
Multiple Sclerosis
Approx 400k people in US have MS, 200 more a week diagnosed. Degenerative disease of certain brain tissues. Can cause paralysis, blindness, deafness, and mental deterioration. Sysmptoms numbness, double vision, dragging of the feet, loss of bladdar & bowl control, speech problems and fatigue. May disappear over a period of years but comes back and stays back.
