What is a systematic review? What is a meta-analysis? Why are these approaches valuable for researchers and clinicians?

a systematic review is a type of literature review that collects and critically analyzes multiple research studies on papers about a certain topic

a meta-analysis is the use of statistical methods to summarize the result of these studies

it helps put together multiple studies in a more summative way and it helps answer specific questions using multiple studies for evidence

What are the main finding contrasting athlete to normally active individuals?

athletes have better pain tolerance than normally active individuals; the results for pain thresholds are inconclusive

Describe the results in 3.2.1 and 3.2.2

Pain tolerance:

- 5 studies revealed statistically significant elevationsin pain tolerance in athletes, and 7 studies demonstratedno significant differences

- pain tolerance varied with differenttypes of physical activities, but not with different types of noxiousstimuli

- in endurance athletes pain tolerance was consistently characterized by a moderateeffect size and low heterogeneity

- in game sport athletes, theeffect was high and was characterized by high heterogeneity

- in strengthsports, only one study was available and reported no differencesbetween athletes and normally active controls

-Significant differences between athletes and normally activecontrols were observed for both ischemic stimulationand cold pain stimulation

-Separate analyses of male and female athletesshowed significant sex differences

Pain threshold

- Fivestudies showed a statistically significant elevation of pain thresholdin athletes, and 4 studies showed no significantdifferences

- no significant differences in pain threshold after meta-analysis; studies are limited

- no significant differences, but the 2 studies that assessedgame sports and thesingle study that assessed strength sports demonstrated significant differences between athletesand normally active controls

-A separate analysis of males and females yielded no significant effects in the male subgroup , but female athletes were characterizedby significantly heightened pain thresholds compared tonormally active controls
