What is sleep pressure and how does it change over 48 hours?

Sleep pressure is the tendency to asleep that increases throughout the day. It is lowest when you first wake up in the morning and highest at night.

What happens to sleep pressure when you skip a night of sleep?


Sleep pressure fluctuates between normal ranges every day; when you skip a night of sleep, sleep pressure will accumulate and go over that homeostatic range. This results in sleep debt.

What would happen to sleep pressure if you took a nap during the day?

Sleep pressure would decrease.
