The process of encouraging clients to take control and improve their overall health.

Wellness

A positive state of health

Primary prevention

(Preventative) Decreasing the risk of alterations in health occurring by changing behaviors or minimizing exposures.


Ex: immunizations; fluoridation of water supply; family planning ; exercise promotion

Secondary prevention

(Assessment) Early screening interventions to detect a disease process before it progresses to cause symptoms or complications in the client.


Ex: TB test; chest X-ray

Tertiary prevention

(Treatment) Efforts to control a health issue that has already occurred or to slow the spread & prevent further illness.


Ex: long-term rehab; BP meds (long term)

Quaternary care

Prevention that focuses on protecting clients from excessive use of medical interventions that can cause more harm than good.

Self-care

Any activity individuals can utilize to promote their mental health and overall well-being.

Health Literacy

Knowledge that clients have about their own health, and the ability to act on that knowledge to make decisions about their own health.

Modifiable risk factors

Behaviors & exposures that can raise or lower a person’s risk, & that can be changed to reduce risk.

Non-modifiable risk factors

Conditions that increase the risk of developing a disease & cannot be changed. They include genetics, ethnicity/race, age, & family health history.

Culture

A group of ideas & behaviors shared by members of a society. Cultural beliefs can change over time, but their evolution varies by society.

Culturally competent care

Being sensitive to issues related to culture, race, gender, & sexual orientation while providing care to nondominant populations.
