What is the function of the lymphatic system?
To conserve fluid and plasma proteins that leak out of the capillaries
To form a major part of immune system that defends the body against disease
Absorbs lipids from the intestinal tract
Is lymph palpable everywhere it is located?
No
Spleen
left upper quadrant of abdomen
4 functions:
-to destroy old RBCs
-to produce antibodes
-to store RBCs
-to filter microorganisms from the blood
Tonsils
Palatine, adenoid, and lingual (3 total)
Located at entrance to respiratory and GI tract
Respond to local inflammation
Thymus
flat pink gray gland located in superior mediastinum behind the sternum and in front of the aorta
atrophies at puberty, large in size until then
important in developing T lymphocytes of the immune system in children
serves no function in adults
Lymph nodes
small oval clumps of lymphatic tissue located at intervals along the vessels. They function to filter the fluid before it is returned to the bloodstream and filter filter out microorganisms that could be harmful to the body. Nodes become swollen and tenderwhen pathogens are exposed to lymphocytes in lymph nodes and mount an antigen specific response to eliminate the pathogens
Cervical nodes
drain head and neck
Axillary nodes
drain breast and upper arm
Epitrochlear node
drains hand and lower arm
Inguinal nodes
drain most of the lymph in lower extremity, external genitalia, and anterior abdominal wall
How does the lymphatic system defend the body?
through phagocytosis
What would happen without lymphatic drainage?
fluid buildup would produce edema
What causes enlarged nodes?
infection
malignancies
immunologic diseases
What propels the lymphatic system?
skeletal muscles
Right lymphatic duct vs thoracic duct
Right lymphatic duct
Empties into right subclavian vein
Drains right side of head and neck, right arm, right side of thorax, right lung and pleura, right side of the heart, and right upper section of liver

Thoracic Duct
Drains the rest of the body
Empties into left subclavian vein
