2 common carotids
2 subclavian arteries |
Where do the 4 major vessels fo the neck arise from?
Root of neck
Where do the carotid arteries arise from?
Carotid sheath in the anterior triangle of the neck
Where does the common carotid artery bifurcate?
superior border of the thryroid cartilage = C3/C4
Location of Internal Carotid Artery
Most lateral in the neck, no branches in the neck
Location of External carotid artery
Most medial in neck, 8 branches
What are the 2 sets of receptors of the Carotid arteries?
- Carotid bodies (chemoreceptors)
- Carotid sinus (baroreceptors) |
Location of carotic bodies
at the bifurcation of the common carotid
Location of carotid sinus
at beginning of internal carotid artery
What is the origin of the Right carotid artery?
branches from brachiocephalic trunk
What is the origin of the Left Carotid arter?
branches from aortic arch
What is the course of the common carotid artery?
- lies within carotid sheath
*can be compressed against anterior tubercle of C6 (carotid tubercle) |
Where is the termination of the Common Carotid Artery?
bifurcates at superior border of thyroid cartilage (C3-C4)
What does the common carotid artery contain?
- carotid bodies
What is the innervation of the carotid bodies?
CN IX = glossopharyngeal nerve
What is the origin of the internal carotid artery?
arises from common carotid artery
What is the course of the internal carotid artery?
cervical part ascends anterior to C3 to C1
Where is the termination of the internal carotid artery?
enters cranial cavity through carotid canal in petrous part of temporal bone
What does the internal carotid artery supply?
1) Brain
2) Orbit |
What does the internal carotid artery contain?
Carotid sinus at its origin
What innervates the internal carotid artery?
CN IX = glossopharyngeal nerve
What are the 8 branches of the external carotid artery?
"Steve And Lisa Found Orgy Party Most Successful"
Superior thyroid Ascending pharyngeal Lingual Facial Occipital Posterior auricular Maxillary Superficial temporal |
Superior thyroid artery
1st branch of external carotid, runs down to thyroid gland.
Gives rise to superior laryngeal artery for the larynx. |
Ascending Pharyngeal Artery
Smallest branch of external carotid artery.
Supplies pharynx, prevertebral muscles, and meninges. |
Lingual Artery
Arises from external carotid just superior to lingual artery.
Runs along inner surface of mandible and enters face anterior to masseter muscle. |
