Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany and is the worlds largest beer and traveling fun fair. It is a 16 day folk festival that starts from the mid to the end of September to the first weekend of October. Every year more than 6 million people from all over the world attend the event.
The origin of the festival started in 1810 and is an important part of Bavarian culture. The first ever original Fest was the celebration of a Bavarian wedding between Princess Teresa and Prince Ludwig I on October 12, 1810. The next day, the city began celebrating with activities such as concerts, parties, and even a horse race.
The event went so well that it became a annual Oktoberfest tradition. Cities around the world hold Oktoberfest celebrations in model after the Munich event. Beer and wine are the highlight of the festival, but there are other activities to attend. Attendants walk from tent to tent trying different varieties and brands of beers.
Each Oktoberfest begins with a parade led by the mayor of Munich and the “Munchner Kindl” or “Munich child”, the cities mascot. The tapping of the first beer keg begins at noon when the mayor shout out, “O’zapft” or “it is tapped”.
Then the festival begins and the drinking of beer can begin. Beer and Wine tents are the main attraction, but their is a lot more to offer at this festival including Ferris wheels, rollercoasters, and game stands. It is free to enter the festival however if you want to drink, eat, or ride the attractions it cost money.
A normal tent table reservation costs about $34-$54 US dollars. In total over 7,100,000 liters of beer are sold and 89,259 liters of wine are served. The food served at Oktoberfest consists of chicken, pork sausages, fish, pork knuckles, and oxen.
Typical outfits for the festival includes dirndls and lederhosen. Octoberfest is one of Munich’s most popular and profitable tourist attraction brining in over 450 million Euros each year.
For the weather conditions it can vary but since the summer is over the days can get to highs of 70 degrees Fahrenheit but the evenings and at night can get cold even dropping close to freezing point and sometimes there can be heavy downpours of rain.
Transportation to the festival should be taken by public transportation like the train due to severe traffic jams, no parking lots, and especially if you are drinking alcoholic beverages. Kids and teenagers can attend the festival and are welcomed because of all the rides and attractions, not just beer drinking.
If someone is 16 years or older they are permitted to drink beer, but not strong alcohol. 18 years and older there is no limitation on what or the amount of beer or strong alcohol you consume. Each tent has there own atmosphere and mood and each tent hosts different events. It is strongly encouraged that you travel to each different tent and experience them all.
