Who is Paul Lawrence Dunbar?
(1872-1906)
He was the first African American poet who was able to support himself by his writing alone. He died before the Harlem Renaissance began, but he paved the way for future African American writers.
Who was Countee Cullen?
(1903-1946)
Born in NY City, graduated from NYU and then from Harvard with a masters degree; married to W.E.B. De Buois' daughter. Unlike most poets of his time, Cullen used traditional forms and methods when writing poetry. Cullen also focused on a variety of issues, not just racial issues.
Who was Langston Hughes?
(1902-1967)
He is the most well known writers in the Harlem Renaissance period and wrote poems, plays, movie screenplays, short stories, nonfiction (including his own autobiographys), and edited other people's work. Langston Hughes was born in Missouri and lived both there and in Cleveland Ohio while growing up. He wrote for the school magazine in high school and grew up in an affluent family. His father wanted him to become an engineer. However, he quit school and dropped out of college to become a writer and was cut of from the family and its money. He then took a steam boat to Africa to explore his roots. He returned and worked as a bus boy at a Washington D.C. hotel where he was discovered by another poet, Vachel Lindsay. He often wrote about the struggles of African Americans, and ordinary life. Often incorporating jazz into his poetry.
Who was Claude McKay?
(1890-1948)
Born in Jamaica, the son of poor farm workers. In 1912 he won an award that brought him to the US. He missed Jamaica terrible though, as seen in his autobiography titled "A Long Way From Home".
Who was Sterling Brown
(9101-1989)
THe son of a distinguished pastor, Graduated from Williams with Honors and got a masters from Harvard in English. He was a noted poet, author and editor, although most of his poetry was neglected during his lifetime. He spent most of the rest of his as a teacher at Howard University.
Who was James Weldon Johnson
(1871-1938)
Known for his eclectic talents, he was the first African American admitted to the Florida Bar. In addition to writing literature he wrote songs. He was the secretary for the NAACP. He died in a tragic car accident while vacationing in Maine.
