1. Come from deciduous or broad-leafed trees


2. Generally slow growing which tends to make them harder but more expensive.


3. Please note though that not all are hard. Balsa which is very soft and is often used for model planes is in fact one!

Hardwood

1. Come from coniferous trees which have needles instead of leaves


2. Grow faster than (something else) and so are cheaper and easier to work with because they are softer than (the something else)


3. Supplied in standard sections sawn and planed smooth


4. Sizes are confusing because they are smaller once planed

Softwood

1. Timber sheets which are produced by gluing wood layers or wood fibres together


2. Have been developed mainly for industrial production as they can be made in very large sheets of consistent quality


3. Are available in many thicknesses
