BASE
Portion of hair shaft, from the scalp to 1" upward; the area of the strand where color is most often applied during a retouch
BASE-TO-ENDS APPLICATION
The technique of applying a color product from the base throughout the ends; generally used during a darker application
COLOR
The visual effect achieved when light is reflected off a given object
COLOR WHEEL
A tool in which the twelve colors are positioned in a circle, allowing any mixed color to be described in relation to the primary colors
COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel; when mixed in equal porportion these colors produce neutral shades which bear no resemblance to the two components
COOL
A term used to describe a color with an absence of warmth. Also descriced as Ash or Drab
DECOLORIZE
The process of lightening the hair's natural pigment

The addition of color pigment to darken or add tone to the hair

INTENSITY
The vividness or purity of a color
Level
Also known as value or depth; the degree of lightness or darkness in hair color usually ranging from level 1 (black) to level 10 or 12 (lightest blonde)
