Habitat

An area with the combination of resources and environmental conditions that promote residency by individuals of a given species and allows them to survive and reproduce

It is defined this way because habitat is species specific.

Habitat selection

Individuals of a species will settle and establish residency in areas that contain a set of specific resources necessary for their survival by environmental cues. Either directly or indirectly associated with the resources in the area .

High quality habitat

Habitat areas with sufficient resources to support consistently high densities of residents or high rates of survival and reproduction

Low quality habitat

Areas with low level of resources and rates or survival and reproduction are low.

Front (Term)

Dispersal

The one way movement of an individual from one home range to another. In which it establishes a new home range

Novel feature

Event or organism where a species has not evolved reducing habitat quality by increasing mortality and reducing reproduction

Home range

The area in which an animal spends most of its time engaged in normal activities

Core area

The area of heaviest use within a home range

Territory

An area occupied exclusively and defended by an animal or group of animals

Migration

A persistent moment across difference habitats in response to seasonal changes in resource availability and quantity.

In mammals these typically are round trip movements and the individual returns to the same breeding and wintering ares each year.

Inbreeding depression

The reduced reproductive success and survival of offspring from closely related parents compared to offspring of unrelated parents

Philopatric

Living and breeding near the place of birth

What are the 2 theoretical models associated with habitat selection and what do they state?

Think of habitats as patches or areas of suitable habitat mixed with areas of unsuitable habitat and apply optimal foraging. This theory enables researchers to predict which habitat patches an animal should select and when it should leave to get the grades Benefit for the least cost
