GTN patch INDICATIONS

1. CPO not responding rapidly to GTN SL.


2. HTN in autonomic dysreflexia not responding to GTN SL.


3. HTN prior to fibrinolysis for STEMI.


4. HTN during inter hospital transfer for STEMI.


5. HTN during inter hospital transfer for stroke clot retrieval.

GTN patch DOSAGE

Transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) 10 patch.


Releases 0.5mg of GTN per hour.

GTN patch ADMINISTRATION

Apply to dry skin, pref lateral aspect of upper arm.



Avoid hair.

GTN patch ONSET

10-20 mins

GTN patch DURATION

18 hrs. Effects will dissipate after 10-20 mins once patch is removed.

GTN patch PREPARATION

Transdermal patch of approx 20cm in size.

GTN patch PHARMACOKINETICS

GTN released from the patch in to the skin, then absorbed in to circulation, reaching a plateau of absorption rate at approx 2 hrs.



Predominantly metabolised by the liver.



No significant effects from liver impairment on admin.

GTN Common Interactions

Effects may be increased if on antihypertensive.



Severe and/or prolonged hypotension may occur if a medicine for erectile dysfunction has been taken within 24hrs.


- Sildenafil is common and also used in tx of pulmonary HTN.


- All are long acting vasodilators. GTN causes further vasodilation.
