Motive
The smallest recognizable idea in a piece that the piece is based on and centered around.
Period
Two phrases followed by a cadence.
Antecedent
A parallel phrase that ends on a note other than I
Consequent
A parallel phrase that typically ends on I
Contrasting Period
Two or more phrases that form a period but are not very similar to each other.
Double Period
Four or more phrases where the first two are the antecedent and the second two are the consequent.
Parallel Period
An antecedent phrase followed by a consequent one that are similar and typically can be conclusive.
Phrase Group
Two or more phrases that do NOT form a period but still seem like they belong together.
Refrain
The main repeated part of the piece that is like a Chorus.
Binary Form
Two similar sections of music that are at least three phrases in length. The second one usually modulates to a different key.
Rounded Binary Form
Binary form except that after the second section it modulates and goes back into the original key forming an A,B,A' pattern where A' is only about half of the original A.
Simple Binary Form
Binary form in which after the second section it does not return to the first one.
Ternary Form
Binary form except that the second section is completely different from the first and when the second phrase ends it goes back to repeat all of the first phrase and return to the original key.
Solo, Soli
A section of music typically played or leaded by one instrument or voice. Soli is plural.
Stanza
a verse.
Strophic
Piece of music where all stanzas and refrains are all sang along to the same musical tune.
Theme
A complete phrase or period that is noticeable throughout the piece as being one of the main ideas of the piece.
Thematic Transformation
Changing a theme up a little by using a permutation (augmentation, diminution, fragmentation).
Through-composed
Music that has close to no repeated ideas.
Tutti
When everyone in the piece is playing at the same time.
Variation
When a section of music is repeated but it is changed slightly.
Verse
A section of music that is repeated throughout the piece but is changed slightly each time.
