Phrase Group
|

Binary Form
|
Two similar sections of music that are at least three phrases in length. The second one usually modulates to a different key.

Rounded Binary Form
|
Binary form except that after the second section it modulates and goes back into the original key forming an A,B,A' pattern where A' is only about half of the original A.

Simple Binary Form
|
Binary form in which after the second section it does not return to the first one.

Ternary Form
|
Binary form except that the second section is completely different from the first and when the second phrase ends it goes back to repeat all of the first phrase and return to the original key.

|
A section of music typically played or leaded by one instrument or voice. Soli is plural.

|

Strophic
|
Piece of music where all stanzas and refrains are all sang along to the same musical tune.

Theme
|
A complete phrase or period that is noticeable throughout the piece as being one of the main ideas of the piece.

Thematic Transformation
|
Changing a theme up a little by using a permutation (augmentation, diminution, fragmentation).

Through-composed
|
Music that has close to no repeated ideas.

|
When everyone in the piece is playing at the same time.

Variation
|
When a section of music is repeated but it is changed slightly.
|
|
Verse
|
A section of music that is repeated throughout the piece but is changed slightly each time.
