Accent
When you play a certain note louder or with more force than the rest.
Agogic accent
slightly elongating the length of a note.
Dynamic accent
When the note is played louder than the rest.
Metrical accent
Accenting a note that is on a downbeat.
Anacrusis
Notes played before the standard timing of the piece begins.
Asymmetrical meter
meter that is not symmetric, or does not have an even number of beats.
Augmentation
Repetition of a part of music but all the beats are twice as long.
Bar Line
the vertical line that separates measures.
Beat
Basic unit of time/counting in music.
Compound beat
A beat that is based off of two's or four's
Simple beat
A beat that is based off of three's
Multimeter
when there is more than one type of meter in one piece of music.
Cross rhythm
playing two different rhythms at the same time.
Diminution
Repetition of a part of music with all the rhythms being cut in half.
Dot, double dot
adding half the value of a not to it, or adding 3/4 of its value to it.
Dotted rhythm
When a note is folowed by a dot.
Duplet
when only two notes of a triplet are played.
