contains all the genes and chromosomes that will influence the development of the person for the rest of his/her life
Germinal period (1)
The period in prenatal development that takes place in the first two weeks after conception. It includes the creation of zygote, cell division, and the attachment of the zygote to the uterine wall. Shortly after the zygote has been formed, it begins a process of duplication and division
Blastocyst
consist of inner mass cells that will eventually develop into the embryo
Trophoblast
an outer layer of cells that later provides nutrition and support for the embryo
Embryonic period (2)
is the period of prenatal development that occurs from two to eight weeks after conception
During Embryonic period
- Head and blood vessels begin to form
- Heart begins to beat
- Ears, nose, and mouth start to form
- Buds that will become the arms and legs appear - Size is about 1⁄2 inch
- About 8 weeks after conception, the embryo has almost all the basic organs except the sex organ
Placenta
becomes fully developed by about 4 weeks, contains small blood vessels from the mother and offspring which intertwine
Umbilical cord
contains one vein and two arteries that connects the baby to the placenta
Amniotic sac
contains the fluid in which the developing embryo floats
Foetal period (3)
– From the eight week until birth.
During Foetal period
- Refinement of all the primitive organs
- Muscles develop, cartilage begins to harden to bone and all major organs complete their formation
- Foetus can move almost every part of its body
- Sex organs take shape (biological maleness or femaleness)
- During the last two months of prenatal development, fatty tissues develop - The foetus grows longer and gains substantial weight
Viability of foetus
many infants born at 28 weeks survive
The birth process
about 40 weeks of pregnancy, the birth process begins.
