What are the three parts of the MC questions?
STEM
Part of the MC item that asks the question.

KEY
Correct option

DISTRACTERS
Incorrect options
What are the steps of MC item writing?
-Formulate propositions and translate them into a question (or incomplete statement).
-Develop a concise answer (correct option).
-Provide plausible but incorrect distracters.
What is important to remember about the content of MC questions?
-Keep items independent of one another.
-Avoid textbook verbatim phrasing.
-Avoid items based on opinions.
-Balance/randomize the correct option position.
-Format the item vertically, not horizontally.
MC Question content?
-Ask questions that require more than just knowledge of the facts.
Selection of the best answer when all options have some element of correctness.
More discriminating than items asking for a “fact.”
-Don’t offer superfluous information as an introduction to a question.
When we do this, we are probably unconsciously trying to “teach” during the test.
Often confusing for the students.
What is important about the stem of MC questions?
-Use a single idea, question, or incomplete statement.
-Include the central idea and most of the phrasing in the stem.
-Should be understood without reading the options.
-Introduce novelty to test understanding.
-Manipulate the difficulty.
-Minimize reading load.
-Eliminate excess verbiage (window dressing).
MC Questions: Rules #1
-Use of negatives (avoid trickery)
-Order options that form a quantitative/ qualitative scale.
-Number of options between 3 and 6.
-Should all be parallel in grammatical structure, type of content, length, complexity, and consistent with the stem.
-Minimize reading amount.
-Move repetitive words to the stem.
MC Questions Rules #2
-DO ask questions using “none of the above.”
-Use of this option makes the question harder and more discriminating. The uncertain student cannot focus on a set of options that MUST contain a correct answer.
-Don’t use this for “best answer” questions.
-Don’t include superfluous information in the options.
-Don’t use specific determiners in the options.
-Don’t repeat wording from the stem in the correct answer.
MC Questions Rules #3?
-Manipulate difficulty: homogeneous options make it more difficult.
-Ask questions with varying numbers of options.
-Don’t use “all of the above.”
Recognition of a wrong option eliminates the choice as plausible.
Recognition of two right options forces this choice to be correct and eliminates other choices as plausible
What are some distractors of MC questions?
-Use true statements that do not correctly answer the question.
-Promote common misconceptions or misunderstandings.
-Use paired opposites.
-Use extraneous clues:
Common phrases
Scientific sounding answers
Good sounding words
Textbook terminology
Verbal associations with the stem
Elaborate answers (if one option is longer, it should be incorrect)
