What are the steps to creating an affective measure (Lykert Scale)?
1)The construct of interest must be clearly and precisely defined.
2)The scale itself is then designed.
3)Pilot tests are conducted.
4)The measure is administered, and item analysis is conducted.
5)The scale is validated and normed.
What are some important things to remember about Lykert Type Questions?
-Sometimes preexisting surveys and measures can capture what you want to measure and the question you would like to answer.
-However, you must still look very carefully at each of the items and the reliability and validity of the assessment scores to determine whether the measures are good for your research question.
-Make sure the constructs defined by the researchers who used/wrote the previous measures are done in the same way you want to define them.
What are the steps to writing Lykert type Questions?
1)Decide on your response choices.

2)Write the item stems.

3)Write the instructions
What is the first step of response choices?
First, decide on your response choices.
Anchors
How do you want the participants to answer your questions?
Do you want a neutral point?
Do you want a N/A response?
What is an Agreement?
-Agreement – The extent to which they agree with the items.
-Usually bipolar and symmetrical around a neutral point.
-Asked whether they agree with the item, as well as the magnitude of their agreement or disagreement.
What is an Evaluation?
Evaluation – An evaluative rating of each item.
-Choices range from positive to negative.
What is frequency?
-Frequency – Judgment of how often each item has or should occur.
-Most scales use verbal anchors (e.g., never or always).
Writing Lykert type Items?
-Phrasing of items is dependent to a large extent upon the type of judgment or response people are asked to make.
-Agreement – declarative statements that one can agree with or not.
-Evaluation – words or short phrases representing persons, places, things, events, or behaviors a person can evaluate.
-Frequency – events, circumstance, or behaviors that make sense to indicate how often they occur.
-Will you use negatively worded items?
Writing Lykert type Items Part 2?
-Use simple words for readability.
-Use precise words to avoid ambiguity.
-Each statement should clearly map onto one construct definition.
-Each statement should contain only one idea.
“I work hard in school because I have high expectations for myself.”
-Avoid questions that may have more socially appropriate responses.
“Teachers are good people to go to for help.”
Writing Lykert type Items Part 3?
-Avoid the use of negatives simply to reverse the wording of an item.
Bad: “I am not satisfied with my job.”
Better: “I hate my job.”
-Avoid colloquialisms, expressions, and jargon.
Writing Instructions for Lykert Type Items?
-Instructions should be clearly defined, easy to understand, and as brief as possible.
-Include the following:
Purpose of survey
How to answer items
Whether responses are anonymous or not
Honest answers are requested
Answer all items
Survey is not a test
