Describe extensor compartment of the forearm
Posterior compartment of the forearm. Contains extensor muscles of hand and digits; innervated by the radial nerve. Nerves and vessels run in the connective tissue plane that divides the superficial and the deeps layers of the extensor muscles.
List superficial layer muscles of the extensor compartment of the forearm
Superficial layer muscles extend the wrist and proximal phalanges. M: 1. brachioradialis, 2. extensor carpi radialis longus, 3. extensor carpi radialis brevis, 4. extensor digitorum, 5. extensor carpi ulnaris. M 2-5 (all but brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus) attach to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus by common extensor tendon
Brachioradialis site of attachment /function
Lateral surface of distal radius and lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus. Flexes the forearm at the elbow; capable of both pronation and supination; innervated by the radial nerve
Extensor carpi radialis longus site of attachment/function
Lateral epicondyle of the humerus by common extensor tendon and base of metacarpal 2. Extends the wrist and abducts the hand at the wrist.
Extensor carpi radialis brevis site of attachment/function
Lateral epicondyle of the humeris by common extensor tendor and base of metacarpal 3. Extend and abduct the wrist.
Extensor digitorum site of attachment/function
Lateral epicondyle of the humerus by common extensor tendon and extensor extension of digits 2-5; extends the medial four digits of the hand
Extensor carpi ulnaris site of attachment/function
Lateral epicondyle of the humerus by common extensor tendon; extend and adduct wrist/hand
How are tendons of extensor digitorum held together?
By intertendious connection on the posterior surface of the hand
What is expansor extention?
Special connective attachments by which the extensor tendons insert into the phalanges
Name muscles of the deep layer of forearm extensor
1. Supinator, 2. adbuctor pollicis longus, 3. extensor pollicis brevis, 4. extensor pollicis longus, 5. extensor indicis;
Proximal attachment of 2-5 are posterior surfaces of radius, ulna, and interosseous membrane. 3 of the muscles emerge between extensor digitorum and extensor carpi radialis brevis (outcropping) |
