What is the source of skull bone?
neural crest
What are the 3 modes of bone growth in the skull?
-endochondral - occurs at synchondroses, like epiphyses of long bones
-sutural - creation of bone in sutures
-remodeling - complex scouring and addition of bone to vreate new surface
What are the types of mesenchyme that will become skull bone?
-endochondral - laid down as cartilage later ossified
-intramembranous - laid down directly as bone
-pharyngeal arch - neural crest cells migrate into arches then form bone
How does the base of the skull grow?
laid down in cartilage, will retain synchondoses, until puberty when growth plates will close
What is the basis for cranial growth?
cranial growth is under the influence of the brain, but adapts to other structures as well (think of middle meningeal artery), will fill in areas
How does the bone of the face grow?
sutures are arranged in a plane, will grow inferiorly and out to enlarge overall size
Where do sinuses come from?
result of groeh of the skull tables away from each other, outer and inner, space invaded by blood vessels, then respiratory epithelium, then becomes a sinus
