necessary loss
This is part of the cylce of life that is anticipated but still may be intensely felt. This type of loss can be replaced by something better or different.
Actual loss
Any loss of a valued person or item.
Percieved loss
Any loss defined by client that is not obvious to others
Maturational Loss
Any loss normally expected due to the developpmental processing of life. these are assc. with normal life transitions.
Situational loss
Any unanticipated loss caused by an external event.
normal grief
considered uncomplicated. emotions can be negative, angry, resentment, withdrawal, hopelessness, and guilt, but should change to acceptance over time. Acceptance should be evident by 6 mo. Somatic complaints may occur
Anticipatory grief
Implies the "letting go" of an object or person before the loss i.e. terminal illness.
dysfunctional grief
Difficult progression through the expected stages of grief. Symptoms of grief usually more severe and may result in depression of exacerbate pre-existing disorder. somatic complaints persist.
Disenfranchised grief
Entails an expereinced loss that cannot be publicly shared or is not socially acceptable such as suicide or abortion.
