What was the Great Depression and New Deal?
-A severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II.
-The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but for the most part began in the late 1920's.
What was the New Deal?
- A series of economic programs implemented in the United States.
What was Black Tuesday?
- This event took place in October 29, 1929 and on this day the stock market crashed
What was the Dust Bowl?
-Severe dust storms causing much agricultural and ecological damage in the late 1920's.
-Caused by severe droughts and extensive farming.
What was the Gross National Product?
-Referring to the market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period.
Who was Herbert Hoover?
-31st president of the United States
-Believed in laissez-faire and rugged individualism.
-Became president on cusp of Great Depression and did not contribute much in order to alleviate it.
Who was Franklin D Roosevelt?
-32nd President of the United States.
-A central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war.
-The only American president elected to more than two terms.
- He was very optimistic and active in trying to make the nation better.
What was the 20th Amendment?
-Throughout this time period the Great Depression happened and effected not only America,but had a worldwide effect.
What was the New Deal?
-Series of economic programs implemented by FDR between 1933 and 1936
- It focused on relief for poor/unemployed, recovery of economy to normal levels, and reform of financial system to prevent another depression.
Who was Frances Perkins?
-He was graduate of Mount Holyoke College
-A veteran activist for social welfare and reform who became FDR's industrial commissioner in New York before becoming secretary of labor and the nation's first woman cabinet member.
What were the Fireside Chats?
-Radio broadcasts of FDR's special sessions with Congress.
What is FDIC?
-Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
-Insures that money put in to your bank will be given back if the bank goes bankrupt.
What was the Public Works Administration?
- A component of NIRA, led by Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes. -Funded public works projects to increase employment and consumer spending.
What were the Civilian Conservation Corps?
-This agency began in March 1933 as an unemployment relief effort
- It provided work for jobless young men in protecting and conserving the nation's natural resources.
What was Schechter vs. U.S?
-In 1935 Supreme Court "sick chicken case," the Court found the National Recovery Administration unconstitutional.
-Its excessive delegation of legislative power to the executive and the regulation of business that was intrastate instead of national.
What was the Securities Exchange Commission?
-An independent agency which holds primary responsibility for enforcing the federal securities laws and regulating the securities industry.
What was the Second New Deal?
-A term used by commentators at the time and historians ever since to characterize the second stage of the New Deal programs of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
What was the Works Progress Administration?
-An agency that employed over 8.5 million people for public works projects.- Some projects would consist of roads, highways, buildings, parks, bridges, airports.
- It was led by Harry Hopkins.
What was the Wagner Act 1935?
-Congress created this act in order to protect workers' right to unionization.
-The National Labor Relations Board was created to enforce the National Labor Relations Act. The NLRB conducts secret-ballot elections to determine whether employees want union representation and also investigates unfair labor practices by employers and unions.
What was the Social Security Act 1935?
-In 1935, legislation (Second New Deal) provided for old-age pensions and unemployment insurance.
Who was Huey Long?
- A well- known governor, senator, and orator from Louisiana.
-Contributed to improving public service and gained respect from service workers.
Who was John L. Lewis?
- A part of the United Mine Workers of America.
-Ran for presidency for the American Federation of Labor.
- Supported FDR and witnessed the Taft-Harley Act get passed.
