cave paintings - hieroglyphs - pictures for the poor and writing was for the rich- industrial revolution gave the working class more time for entertainment + $ for education led to introduction of mixed of words/images - politic cartoons led to incorporation of words and images, no dialogue balloons yet, single panel, 1st appeared in 1895 - comic strips katzenjammer kids (1897), used words balloons.multi panels.Comic Books: full-length collections of stories, often released serially(sequence),Graphic Novel : full length , continuous stories with mixture or words and images
