is a connecting word that shows the relationship between a noun and another word in the sentence. This can be a space or a time relationship.

Direct Object
Receives the action (ask "the verb did what?")
Indirect Object
Is affected by the verb but is not the direct recipient of the action. (identify by seeing whether you can precede it with the preposition "to").
