Because the French and Indians lived close to one another they shared games and traded metal tools, guns, blankets, clothing, and jewelry. The settlers often wore moccasins and leather pants made by the Indians. The settlers also ate Indian foods such as corn, beans, pumpkins and squash.

they had to take care of their families, make clothes and keep their houses clean. they prepared the food which included planting and caring for gardens, harvesting and preserving vegetables and fruit, milking the cows, baking the bread, and cooking meals. They also had to take care of their children.

How did the men and women dress?

They wore very simple clothing. The women made the clothes that their families wore. Men would wear pants made from buckskin or rough cotton and loose-fitting cotton shirts, blue handkerchiefs on their heads, and leather moccasins. During cold weather the men put on a heavy cape with a hood called a capot and wore fur hats and fur mittens.
The women would wear a long red or blue cotton skirts and a short cotton jacket. They also wore a long cotton cape called a pelisse with a white or blue handkerchief on the head, and moccasins. In the winter the women wore a heavy wool jacket.

The richer people wore clothes made from silk, satin and velvet. Some women had special dresses trimmed with ribbons and lace and on special days the women also wore earrings, ivory combs in their hair, silk stockings, and fancy slippers. The men would dress in fancy coats with gold buttons and leather dress shoes with buckles and even a few rich families had clothes made for them in France.

Francois Valle II was the most important official in Ste. Genevieve. His father had been a leader in the town. His wife was Maire Carpentier Valle and had 14 children, 7 died before they were 5 years old. The Valles were wealthy. Valle was a merchant, he made money from mining, salt making, farming and grist and saw milling. the Valles owned much land and many slaves. They let their slaves carry guns for protection on the frontier.
