Describe the purpose and use of the bite-wing image

Film Placement:
the receptor must cover prescibed area of interest

Film Positions:
the receptor must be positioned parallel to the crowns of max and man teeth and stabilized by the tab or the beam alignment

Vertical angulation:

Horizontal angulation:
center ray must be directed thru the contact areas b/w teeth for receptors using bite tabs

Film exposure:
x-ray beam must be centered over the receptor to ensure that all areas are exposed
Describe patient and equipment preparations that are necessary before using the bite-wing technique
Patient Prep:
explain procedure; pt is positioned upright in chair; occlusal plane is parallel to floor and midsagittal plane (midline) is perpendicular to floor, remove eyeglasses and removable oral appliances; place lead apron, thyroid collar

Equipment Prep:
unit is on and exposure factors have been set; infection control protocol is demonstrated; film holder or BW tabs are on covered working surface
Discuss the exposure sequence for a complete mouth radiographic series (CMRS) that includes both periapical and bite-wing exposures
-number of bw have been determined. -choose right or left side.
-follow sequence exposing premolar first then molar bw
-if FMX, expose periapicals 1st and end w/ BW sequence
Describe the premolar and molar bite-wing receptor placements
Sensitive side of receptor toward PID; identification dot is not significant w/ bw image (lower right is suggested); center film over area to be examined using the guideline requirements; ask pts to "slowly bite" on bite-tab

Premolar placement:
Demonstrate at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the distal of mandibular canine, 1st premolar, 2nd premolar, 1st molar, and mesial portion of 2nd molar

Molar placement- Demonstrate 1st, 2nd, 3rd molars. the 2nd molar is centered on the receptor
Describe the purpose and use of vertical bite-wing images
-examine the level of aveolar bone - long portion of receptor in a vertical position
-7 images are taken for complete VBX
-4 images if posterior only
List the size of receptor used in the vertical bite-wing technique
-anterior VBW = size 1 receptor
-posterior VBW = size 2 receptor

VBW placement:

Molar: Center 2nd molar w/ emphasis of open contact b/w 1st and 2nd max molar

Premolar: include distal 1/2 of canine, crowns of 1st and 2nd premolars, medial of 1st molar; emphasis of open contact b/w premolars and canine/premolar

Canine: center canine w/ open contact emphasized b/w lateral incisor and canine

incisor: center central incisors, lateral incisors in view, open contact emphasis b/w central incisors (at midline)

Mods in BW techniquie:
-endentulous spaces: a cotton roll must be placed in the area of the missing tooth to support the BW tab or receptor holder
-Bony growths-The receptor must be placed b/w the tori and the tongue
