Charter

A document that named all the people involved in a venture, and gave them certain powers over their government.

Proprietor

A person to whom the king granted property to have, hold, use and enjoy for his own benefits; wealthy enough to start their own voyages/colonies.

Indentured Servants

People unable to pay for their passage, so they would sell themselves and their families into slavery (5-7 years) -- 2/3 of the population of Pennsylvania

Involuntary Servitude

Men, women, and kids kidnapped off the streets of English cities to fill quotas for settlers and workers

Convicts

Deported to the colonies of life instead of fines of imprisonment in England; includes political criminals who were religious revolutionaries.

African Slaves

First introduced in 1619 in Virginia as a temporary measure until the white population had increased sufficiently. NOT intended to be a permanent state of bandage. (After 30 years, there were about 300 Africans in the colony)

Feudalism

A system of obligations that bound lords and their subjects in Europe during most of the Middle Ages. In theory, the king owned all, or most, of the land and gave it to his leading nobles in return for their loyalty and military service.




(Under feudalism, people were born with a permanent position)
