Legislative Branch
The law making branch of gov't made up of the Senate, the House of Rep's, and agencies that support Congress.
Congress
The bicameral legislature of the federal gov't of the U.S. consisting of two houses: the House of Rep's and the Senate.
House of Representatives
The lower legislative house of the United States Congress - 435 members.
Senate
The upper house of the United States Congress - 100 members - 2 senators each state.
Bicameral
Having two branches or chambers (houses).
Article 1
Portion of the U S Constitution that describes the powers of the legislative branch of the federal gov't.
Census
The procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population (every 10 years).
Reapportionment
The process by which congressional districts are redrawn and seats are redistributed among states in the house.
Redistricting
The process of drawing US electoral district boundaries, often in response to population changes determined by the results of the decennial census.
Gerrymandering
Manipulating the boundaries of (an electoral constituency) so as to favor one party or class.
Cracking
Used to minimize the impact of a voting bloc by splitting a bloc among multiple districts, to prevent them from constituting a majority. ( gerrymandering)
Packing
Concentrating members of a group in a single district, allowing the other party to win the remainder of the districts. (gerrymandering)
Filibuster
A parliamentary procedure where debate is extended, allowing one or more members to delay / entirely prevent a vote on a given proposal.
Cloture
A procedure for ending a debate and taking a vote in a legislative assembly - like Congress.
Incumbent
A person who holds a particular office or position.
Constituent
Any one of the people who live and vote in an area.
Censure
An expression of strong disapproval or harsh criticism. Among the forms that it can take are a stern rebuke by a legislature.
Committee
A legislative sub-organization in Congress that handles a specific duty. Enables members to develop specialized knowledge of matters under their jurisdiction.
