Every Jot and Tittle
promise of the Lord, whether it be great or small, will find its fulfillment, every prayer its answer, every deed its proper reward. In the study of scripture small things often take on great importance. (Joseph Fielding McConkie, Between the Lines: Unlocking Scriptures with Timeless Principles, Honeoye Falls, NY: Digital Publishing, 2009, p. 61)
Joseph Fielding McConkie on the importance of personal revelation.
All scripture, properly understood, seeks to lead men to Christ and thus to get them to harmonize their lives with the principles of the salvation. Scripture teaches us that the principles of the gospel are everlastingly the same, differing circumstances will require revelation particularly suited to the situation peculiar to that time and place. As that principle is true of dispensations, so it is of each individual. All are saved by and through the Atonement of Christ and by obedience to the same laws and ordinances; yet each is entitled to that revelation necessary to his or her own situation and circumstances. This is why each of us is given the gift of the Holy Ghost when we become members of the Church.
Joseph Fielding McConkie on study bibles (commentaries).
I enjoy the help of an Archaeological Study Bible, The Jewish Study Bible, The Catholic Study Bible, and a variety of Protestant study bibles.
Joseph Fielding McConkie on scripture reading and studying.
Suppose we change the goal from reading a certain number of pages each day to learning something that is spiritually exciting, something that adds to our understanding of the gospel and enhances our ability to teach and testify of it each day. In the first instance, you can claim to have read something; in the second, your claim is to knowing something that enriches your life and may well do the same for others.
Jospeh Fielding McConkie on objections to the Restoration.
All objections to the message of the Restoration reduce themselves to the critics’ refusal to admit the principle of revelation.
