Define 'Glasnost' and 'Perestroika'
Glasnost: OPENNESS
> greater government TRANSPARENCY, less censorship, greater flow of information.
Perestroika: RECONSTRUCTING
> economic reform, decentralisation, dismantling of bureaucracy and providing of business incentives that reward individual enterprise or labour (i.e.: movement toward market economy)
Who used the term Glasnost and in what context?
GORBACHEV
While "glasnost" is associated with freedom of speech, the main goal of this policy was to make the country's management transparent and open to debate. In the late 1980s, the Soviet government came under increased criticism and members of the Soviet population were more outspoken in their view that the Soviet government had become a failure. Glasnost did indeed provide freedom of expression, far beyond what Gorbachev had intended, and changed citizens' views towards the government, which played a key role in the demise of the Soviet Union.
Who used the term Perestroika and in what context?
GORBACHEV!
The goal of the perestroika was not to end the command economy but rather to make socialism work more efficiently to better meet the needs of Soviet consumers. The process of implementing perestroika arguably exacerbated already existing political, social and economic tensions within the Soviet Union and no doubt helped to further nationalism in the constituent republics. Gorbachev changed the meaning of freedom for the people of the USSR. Previously, freedom had meant recognition of the Marxist–Leninist regime. Now, freedom meant escaping all constraints.
For what country is the term 'Perestroika period' used today?
China
> This is because of their progressive move towards a market economy
