Degenerative arthritis
Degenerative arthrosis
Degenerative disc disease
Osteoarthrosis
General description of osteoarthrosis (djd)
Progressively worse but NON-inflammatory

CARTILAGE degeneration {microfissures, tears, subchondral bone dz}

Unknown cause but AGE related

***MOST COMMON JOINT PROBLEM***

Due to wear and tear- high stress leads to damage.
Movement DECREASES symptoms and reduces ankylosis
Joints affected w/ osteoarthrosis
WEIGHT bearing joints of hips, knees, AC, basal jt., big toe and DIPs of fingers
Explain CARTILAGE DESTRUCTION relative to djd
Secondary alterations in adjoining tissues.
Collagen & mucopolysaccharides (proteoglycans) as ground substance of chondroitin sulfate.
Abnormal forces in articulation promote loss of chondroitin sulfate via interference of normal chondrocyte fcn. Ground substance gets altered, collagen get exposed => fissures & crevices. Underlying subchondral bone exposed.
Advanced djd on xray may be remarkably ________
asymptomatic
Primary osteoarthrosis
No known proven factors (idopathic)
Middle aged female w/ no hx of trauma or other dz.

*Affects finger DIPs and KNEES
Secondary osteoarthrosis
Known precipitating factors = work hx of chronic repetitive or recurrent injury
Trauma/altered biomechanics
Congenital anomalies
Crystal deposition dz
