Arguments for political recovery

•1924-1929 there were no political uprisings


•There were no political assassinations during this time


•People stopped voting for extremist parties (Nazis called this time the wilderness years)


•New president Hindenburg abided by the constitution

•Weimar were able to setup a welfare state living standards improved


•Industrial efficiency improved by cartel systems created cooperation between industries – example I.G farben huge chemical company

•Germanys share of world trade was lower than it was before the war


•The economy was overstretched by the welfare state •Too reliant on foreign investment


•Not all sectors were recovering such as agriculture farms were too small, farmers had high interest loans •Employers resented binding arbitration massive lockout in the Ruhr 230,000 workers


•Unemployment was increasing before 1929


•Cartels can be seen as negative, they reduced competition so prices remained high
