The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services recognizes the need to help people and provide assistance at every opportunity especially when a Fire Department member suffers a serious injury or dies in the line-of-duty. Therefore, this guideline was created to help the department prepare for and respond to circumstances in a professional and compassionate manner.

Job-Related Traumatic Injury – A blow to the body by an outside force. Examples, crushing injuries suffered in a building collapse, apparatus accident or fall. Burns, smoke inhalation and such climactic injuries as heatstroke or frostbite are considered traumatic injuries.

Job-Related Non-Traumatic Injury –

Job-Related Non-Traumatic Injury – A non-traumatic injury that is strongly believed or has been proven to be attributable to the job. Examples are stress, heart attacks, strokes, diseases and mental illness (suicide).

Non-Job Related Death –

Non-Job Related Death – Deaths, natural and traumatic, that is not related to fire or emergency medical service duty.

Active Member –

Active Member – A full time active member of Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

Inactive Member –

Inactive Member – A retired or former member of Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

Affiliate Member –

Affiliate Member – An individual who has served in some capacity with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. Examples: commissioner, director, dispatcher, office staff employee.

Survivors – Immediate family members

Serious Injury –

Serious Injury – One that is life threatening or that will disable the employee for a substantial period of time.

Family Support Team – The Department’s Family Support Team will be responsible for necessary functions before, during, and after the funeral, and will consist of department Assistant Chiefs, members from each department Division, and the Fire Chief’s Office.

The department’s notification policy for survivors:

1. All department members will provide emergency contact information and update the information annually.


2. Designation of senior management department personnel, and backups, will make the notification.


3. Notification of immediate family members in person before release of any information to anyone else. If members live out of the area, arrangements should be made for in-person notification by the local authorities.


4. A minimum of two members of the department shall make the notification. However, notification should not be delayed if the designated department members are not readily available. Alternate individuals should be used.


5. If needed, family members should be driven to the hospital in a department vehicle and escorted to the proper area. If the family wants to drive their own vehicle, a member of the department should accompany them.

5. Media coordination to release information about the incident, arrange media coverage of the funeral or memorial service, and assure privacy to the family is maintained.


6. Hospital liaison to relay information between medical personnel and the family.


7. Funeral or memorial service coordination including services and burial arrangements, traffic, honor guard, etc.


8. Family liaison to provide personal support for the immediate family, usually at the home. Personal support includes duties such as screening calls and visits, providing local transportation, assisting with burial arrangements, etc.

The department will ensure that the family’s wishes come first.
