- Bucks release an odor from musk glands that induces estrus in does.
What is the response to the buck effect influenced by?
- Sexual aggressiveness of buck
- BCS of does
What is the purpose of a Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE) and what is it based on?
- Predicts furture reproductive performance
- Based on:
... history
... libido
... mating ability
... physical exam
... semen eval
When should a BSE be performed?
- Pre-purchase
- Prior to breeding season
- Investigation of existing problem
What are some methods of semen collection?
- Artificial vagina
- Electroejaculator
What is important to keep in mind when monitoring sperm motility?
Sperm should be swimming towards a destination, NOT circling.
What makes a buck desirable for breeding?
> 70% on BSE
How is sperm evaluated in a BSE?
- Morphology
- Motility
- Concentration
