For strange symbol formula problems (such as a heart, diamond..) what is the strategy?
1) Say the equation aloud, announcing the variable before the shape as the "first number" and the variable after the shape as the "second number."

2) Do anything inside the parentheses first before the outside.
What is the strategy for formula problems with unspecified amounts?

Eg// "The volume of air in the room is increased a certain amount.."
Pick smart (easy-to-work-with) numbers!

formula: change/original = %change
What should you NEVER do with sequence problems?
Never solve a sequence problem with ASSUMPTIONS on the pattern, it's a GMAT trap.

Always use the rule given.
What is the equation for linear sequences?
Sn = k(n) + x
Where k is the constant difference between successive terms.
x is the constant the determines S1 (must be solved for)
What is the equation for exponential sequences?
Sn = x(k^n)
k = Sn/Sn-1
x = must be solved for
When given super complicated looking instructions in sequences "What is S65's units digit?" and no rule?
look for a pattern in the first few Sn's.
What is the strategy to adding up many consecutive numbers?
(Last + first)/2 = mean
(last -first)/increment + 1 = # of terms

mean * # of terms = sum of consecutive numbers
