development
the period of time it takes to get a film funded and into production. Includes developing various drafts of the screenplay, acquiring various rights, raising the finance needed, etc.
copyright
the statutory protection under law to the owner of an artistic work. The work may be a novel, play, script, film, music, etc.
option
the purchase of time to develop a work. Producers take out options on a work, such as a novel, play or script for a specific time and fee. This gives them the exclusive right to develop and finance the film
assignment of rights
the act of a copyright owner assigning certain rights in a work under certain conditions
buyout
a reassignment to the producer by a development investor of its copyright interest in a project on repayment of the development investment plus interest (or a premium)
chain of title
the set of documentation that established the producer's right to make and market the film. It typically includes scriptwriters' agreements, development agreements, option agreements and rights assignments
concept
the basic idea of the film
premise
the dramatic question that triggers the plot
logline
the idea of the film expressed in one sentence
tagline

outline

treatment
a detailed story line from beginning to middle to end (usually 10-30 pages)
scene breakdown
a brief description of each scene in the script
script
